The Rocket
"A good album reviewer, it is said, is as efficient at placing an artist in an established genre as a tenured librarian is at placing a Dewey-decimalized book on its proper shelf. What confidence I had in my reviewing abilities before I received this debut album from Seattle's Skinwalkers was just denied renewal.
"Citing influences from Ray Davies to his Navajo heritage to Middle-Eastern folk music, John Feodorov - Skinwalkers' guitarist, vocalist, organist, accordion player, and songwriter - would seem to subscribe to the salad bowl as opposed to the melting pot theory of our modern society. The components in this most-tasty debut do not muddle and leach flavors from one another like some sort of over-boiled, middle-American soup. Rather, from song to song, you will find fresh and distinct sonic tidbits that stimulate your aural palette in ways Feodorov's declared influences would lead you to expect, but also in ways that suggest this five-piece had a number of secret ingredients when it went into the studio.
From Feodorov's David Byrne-ish vocals on "Returning", to the Boiled In Lead, medieval touches of "The Song of Babylon", to Gina Salá doing vocals on one of the prettiest songs I've heard in ages, "In The Sunlight", your appetite will not only be gratified, but you will feel well-traveled when this album is done playing. So sit back and enjoy.
For my part - although I would welcome another category-defying surprise like this - I'm going to go investigate the tuition and schedules for some remedial genre courses. I must maintain some vestige of Professional ability if I am to keep this gig."

The first track "The Moon," reminded me of a song Quentin Tarrantino might use in one of his movies. This is very unique music....like nothing I've heard before, and I really like it!! Gina Sala's voice has a resemblence to Nina Persson of "The Cardigans". John Feodorov - Songwriter, has influences of Medieval Music and his Navajo background. SKINWALKERS Debut CD has them voted #13 of the 40 best Northwest releases of 1996. They have just finished shooting their video for "Planet Dance". Enthusiasten wie John Feodorov sind es, die immer wieder zeigen, wie farbig Musik und das dazugehšrige Business sein kann. Ambiguous Productions ist ein kleines Label in Amerika, das zur Zeit am Beginn seiner Karriere steht. Skinwalker ist momentan die einzige Veršffentlichung des Labels. Wenn John Feodorov, der Sanger und Songwriter der Band, die Musik beschreiben soll, dann tut er sich recht schwer damit, denn Skinwalker haben sich nicht gerade aufgemacht eine Kategorie zu bedienen.
Art Music soll das Label in Zukunf auf dem Programm haben. Die Gruppe "Fish Magic" wird demnŠchst ihr Debutalbum dort herausbringen und der Ton, den ich herauszuhšren glaubte, machte einen hoffnungsvollen Eindruck. Zukunft. Ambiguous Music hat was vor.
So kommt es nicht von ungefahr, das John auf seine Herkunft als Navajo verweist, aber gleichzeitig Abstand von den diversen Folk-Schubladen nimmt. Nein, da will man nicht mit rein. Eher Kunstmusik, die fur unsere fremden Ohren durchaus einen Bezug zu der typischen, indianischen Handhabung der Percussions hat, aber durch das Spielen eines fast jazzigen Stehbasses und dem eigentumlich schonen Gesang von Gina Salá eine andere Dimension erreicht.
Da sind Vergleiche mit der derzeitigen Avantgarde gefragt. Mutige und gegluckte Versuche eine rockige Melange aus Laurie Anderson und brechtschem VerstŠndnis zu erreichen. Das ist es wo Skinwalker hin wollen. Der indianische Gesichtspunkt, das Verhaltnis zur Natur und der Gewissheit der Herkunft spiegelt sich in den Texten wieder, nimmt aber auf die Musik einen eher zurŸckhaltenden Einfluss.
Skinwalkers Heimat liegt in Seattle, was uns den Klang der Gitarren erklart, doch man sollte vorsichtig sein. Einen Bezug zu Nirvana findet man nur an einer Stelle: Lori Goldston, die hier ein wunderschšnes Cello spielt und die Production Ÿbernahm, setzte ihre Begabung auch schon fur den Nirvana "MTV Unplugged"-Gig ein.
Sie seien definitiv nicht Heavy Metal, meinte John Feodorov, aber Folk und Jazz passt halt irgendwie auch nicht. Sie sind etwas agressiver geworden, und die CD enstspricht nicht mehr unbedingt dem aktuellen Stand. Gina Salá, die eine liebenswerte und manchmal verstorende Singstimme hat, scheint sich zuruckgezogen zu haben. Das ist bedauerlich und umso mehr freue ich mich uber dieses Debut-Werk einer Band, die es geschafft hat eine traumwandlerische Atmosphare mit Cello, manchmal harten Gitarren und perfekten Percussions zu kreiren.
Das Line-Up der CD besteht aus John Feodorov (Gitarre, Gesang, irgendwas das "san xian" heisst, Orgel und einem traurigen, langsamen Akkordion), Mark Reynolds (Drums, Percussion), Gina Salá (Gesang), John Schuh (Stehbass, Chor) und Jeff Sick (Akustische und elektrische Violine). Unterstutzt wurden sie von: Lori Goldston (Cello), Paul Hoskin (Kontrabass Klarinette), Geoff Johns (Tablas), Bill Moyer (Percussions) und Ed Pias.
Eigenartig, und das fiel mir erst zum Schluss auf, das man mit einem sehr offen Ohr eine unbestimmte Nahe zur Musik des Mittleren Ostens, zu den sirrenden Spielweisen mancher KuNstler finden kann. Aber das nur manchmal und vielleicht gerade nur jetzt. So geht es mir nun schon eine ganze Weile, je mehr ich diesen Songs lausche, umso mehr entdecke ich und immer wieder fallen mir neue BezŸge ein. Das Balladeske kann in seinem klagenden Ton aus den nordeuropaischen Gefilden gelangen, die Tragik des Akkordions kommt aus Italien und das Verstandnis stammt von den Neutonungen eines Tom Waits. Wie das Begehen einer Landschaft."
